I WANT TO BE ALONE !!!! Escape Room WPB

I Want to Be Alone - Escape Room West Palm Beach 33401

In the 1932 film “Grand Hotel,” Greta Garbo utters one of the most famous movie lines of all time; “I want to be alone.” I usually hear those words minutes before a group is about to enter one of our rooms. Typically delivered in a tone reserved for someone about to share an Uber ride with a leper.

Having played almost 100 escape games in the company of others, I just don’t get it. People go to the movies with others, sporting events with others, and go to the beach with others; but when it comes to escape rooms, “I want to be alone!” Imagine going to Disney World and telling management at the gate, “This looks awesome, but those other 120,000 people have to go.”

If you absolutely insist on playing alone, inform the escape room at the time of your booking. Many facilities have a special VIP rate to reserve the entire room. Second, if you find out you will be playing with others, assume “the others” can hear you when you complain. It makes things quite awkward if you change your mind.

My question is, “Why the aversion to playing with strangers?” It is a scientifically proven fact, diversity improves outcomes. If the goal is to escape, having a diverse group of people brings much to the table. As a rule, like minded individuals will exhibit group think. As Einstein once said, the definition of insanity “is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.”

As a social experience, playing with strangers breeds good manners. I have seen single families almost come to blows over the correct interpretation of a puzzle. Years of resentment and slights come to the surface during the normal stress of solving an escape room. Having strangers in the room promotes better communication and team work.

Here are a few things you can do to improve your experience when playing with others:

1. Introduce yourself before starting the game. Get everyone’s name. Find out if they have played any escape rooms before. If possible, see if name tags are available.

2. Don’t worry about the gameplay. Most rooms have enough puzzles for everyone. Communicate with others and become part of your new team.

3. Have fun. Remember this is only a game. To the others in the room, you are a stranger too. By the end of the game, I can almost guarantee everyone will have a great time. All too often, dinner plans change to accommodate your new friends.

While I can’t guarantee all your experiences will be picture perfect, playing with strangers can also add one extra benefit. In rooms that have live zombies, they make perfect bait.
